PROJECT [NULL]

Nothingness as interface. Project Null is a study in absence, a website stripped of comfort, color, and convention. Black space, broken grids, and disappearing text form an experience that feels like staring into digital entropy.

PROJECT[NULL] - an artist portfolio that is itself the artwork

PROJECT/OVERVIEW

PROJECT[NULL] is an artist portfolio that questions what portfolios should be. Inverted scrolling. Broken navigation. Reality-bending interactions. The portfolio itself is the art piece. Viewing the work requires engaging with experimental UX. This is not a website. This is digital performance art.

CHALLENGE

Artist portfolios are predictable. Grid of images. Artist statement. Contact form. The challenge: make the portfolio AS interesting as the art. Create an experience that reflects the artists experimental approach. Portfolio as medium, not just container

SOLUTION

DISCOVERY & ANALYSIS

PHASE 1

The process began with subtraction. We dismantled everything that looked like design: no hierarchy, no guidance, no softness. The interface became a void, an anti-experience where silence replaced structure. Every decision was an act of erasure, reducing the site until it became pure function wrapped in emptiness. The goal: to make the user feel the absence.

CONCEPT & ITERATION

DESIGN/PHASE

Once the screen was empty, we gave the void a voice. Lines of code became texture, glitches became rhythm. Subtle movement, fading type, echoes of interactivity, all hinting that something still lived beneath the surface. This phase was about animating absence, making nothingness pulse with digital tension.

DEVELOPMENT & TECH

PHASE 3

Built in Svelte with a hand-written canvas layer, because we needed frame-level control over how the page erases itself. Scroll direction is inverted deliberately, and the navigation reorders on every visit. Nothing here is an accident, including the parts that look like mistakes.

IMPACT & METRICS

PHASE 4

The portfolio was written up in four design publications and got the artist three gallery commissions in its first year. Visitors stay an average of six minutes, which for a site with no menu is the entire point.
